Your Concerns About AI Are Valid. So Is Its Potential.

A parent watches her teen son open an AI tool and type a question. Within seconds, the screen produces an essay outline, a business idea, a study guide, and a polished image.

Her first reaction is not excitement.

It is concern.

"Is this helping my child become more capable, or teaching him to avoid effort?"

"What happens to creativity, memory, patience, and independent thought?"

"And with all the concerns about misinformation, privacy, energy consumption, cheating, and motional dependency, would our family be better off keeping AI at a distance?"

Those are not foolish questions.

They are responsible questions.

AI is too powerful to ignore and too risky to hand over casually. Parents are right to pause before welcoming it into every corner of a teenager’s life.

But history suggests we should also be careful about another mistake: judging a new technology only by its weaknesses, risks, and clumsy early form.

Socrates Was Worried About Writing

More than two thousand years ago, Socrates warned that writing could weaken the human mind.

In Plato’s Phaedrus, Socrates explains that writing things down would create forgetfulness because learners would begin trusting external written symbols instead of exercising their own memories. He also worried that written information could give people the appearance of wisdom without genuine understanding.

That concern sounds surprisingly modern.

Today, we worry that teenagers will ask AI for answers instead of developing knowledge within themselves. Socrates worried that people would look at written words instead of remembering.

And in one important sense, he was right.

Writing changed the way human beings used memory. We no longer needed to memorize every law, history, story, and teaching in order to preserve it.

But Socrates could not fully see what writing would make possible.

Writing allowed knowledge to travel across generations. It made complex civilizations, scientific collaboration, recorded history, libraries, contracts, literature, and modern education possible.

The technology did reduce the need for certain kinds of memory.

It also expanded humanity’s ability to think together across centuries.

Then Came the Printing Press

Nearly eighteen centuries later, Johannes Trithemius watched another technology begin to spread across Europe.

The printing press could reproduce books faster and less expensively than scribes copying every page by hand.

Trithemius was not impressed.

As a Benedictine abbot and scholar, he valued the discipline, care, and spiritual formation involved in copying manuscripts. In his book, In Praise of Scribes, he argued that monks should not abandon handwritten copying simply because printed books were becoming readily available. He believed some people used the convenience of printing to conceal laziness, and he worried that printed books would not receive the same care and ornamentation as handwritten ones.

Again, the concern was not entirely absurd.

Mass production can reduce quality.

Convenience can weaken discipline.

Greater access to publishing can produce more errors, cheap material, propaganda, and intellectual junk along with valuable knowledge.

Yet the printing press also helped ideas travel farther and faster than any scribe could have managed. It expanded literacy, accelerated scholarship, spread scientific discoveries, and placed books into the hands of ordinary people.

Trithemius saw what might be lost.

He could not fully imagine what would be gained.

The First Version of the Future Is Usually Awkward

Technology history is filled with intelligent people underestimating unfamiliar inventions.

Experts doubted the commercial value of telephones, personal computers, online shopping, streaming entertainment, smartphones, and cloud computing. Some of those predictions now sound ridiculous, but they were often made by thoughtful people who understood the limitations of the technology they were examining.

The problem was that they evaluated an early invention as though it had already reached its final form.

Early technologies are often unreliable, slow, expensive, awkward, and easy to dismiss. The first websites were ugly. Early computers froze. Streaming video buffered. Camera phones produced blurry pictures.

Then the technology improved, the infrastructure grew around it, and people discovered uses that were difficult to imagine at the beginning.

AI is currently in that awkward stage.

It hallucinates information.

It can produce bland writing and strange images.

It may misunderstand instructions or answer confidently when it should admit uncertainty.

Its infrastructure also has real environmental costs. The International Energy Agency projects that electricity demand from data centers will rise substantially, with AI-optimized facilities becoming a major source of that growth. The same research also suggests AI could help improve energy efficiency and reduce waste in other parts of the economy.

So yes, parents should take the risks seriously.

But we should not confuse “imperfect today” with “unimportant tomorrow.”

Resistance Is Sometimes Wisdom

There is a lazy way to tell this story:

People opposed writing. People opposed the printing press. Therefore, anyone concerned about AI is foolish.

That is not the Waypoint position.

Socrates recognized a real danger. External tools can weaken internal abilities.

Trithemius recognized a real danger. Convenience can replace discipline, and mass production can reduce care.

Parents who worry about AI are also recognizing real dangers:

  • It can replace effort before a teen develops competence.

  • It can make cheating easier and harder to detect.

  • It can produce persuasive misinformation.

  • It can encourage emotional dependency.

  • It can weaken patience with difficult learning.

  • It can give a teenager the appearance of knowledge without genuine understanding.

Resistance becomes a problem when it stops at fear.

Wisdom asks a better question:

How do we preserve what matters while gaining what the new tool makes possible?

Every Generation Fears the New Tool

Our Children Need More Than Warnings

A teenager who hears only that AI is dangerous may learn to hide its use.

A teenager who receives unlimited access may never learn restraint.

Neither approach prepares a young person for the future.

Parents need to help teens develop a disciplined relationship with AI while they are still at home, where mistakes can become conversations rather than catastrophes.

A simple family standard might be:

Think first. Try first. Use AI second.

Ask the teenager to form an opinion before asking AI for one.

Have them attempt the math problem before requesting an explanation.

Let them write the rough paragraph before asking for feedback.

Require them to verify important claims instead of trusting a fluent answer.

Encourage them to use AI for expansion, not substitution.

That is what it means for AI to become a coach instead of a crutch.

A coach helps the athlete become stronger.

A crutch carries weight the person may eventually need to carry alone.

Show Them What Is Possible

Guardrails matter, but fear alone will not inspire wise use.

Teenagers also need to see what AI can help them create.

A young person can now use AI to:

  • explore a business idea;

  • build a helpful app;

  • illustrate a children’s story;

  • practice another language;

  • understand difficult scientific concepts;

  • plan a service project;

  • compose music;

  • analyze data;

  • create a short film;

  • develop a prototype for solving a community problem.

In previous generations, many of these projects required years of training, expensive equipment, professional connections, or a large team.

AI does not eliminate the need for skill. It changes the starting line.

A motivated teenager can begin building, testing, and contributing much earlier than before.

That is the opportunity parents must not overlook.

Our job is not merely to keep children safe from what AI can do badly.

It is to awaken them to what they might learn to do well.

Parents Do Not Need All the Answers

Many parents feel unprepared because their teenager may already know more about the latest tools than they do.

That is okay.

You do not need to become the family’s best prompt engineer.

You need to remain the clearest voice on judgment, honesty, boundaries, responsibility, and purpose.

Schools may establish rules about AI use.

Parents must help children understand why integrity matters when no teacher is watching.

Technology companies may teach new features.

Parents must ask whether those features strengthen or weaken the person using them.

The printing press eventually became part of education, faith, science, and family life. But society also had to develop editors, libraries, copyright rules, professional standards, and habits of critical reading.

AI will require its own guardrails, customs, and forms of wisdom.

Our children should not have to develop those alone.

Do Not Retreat From the Future

Socrates saw what writing might weaken.

Trithemius saw what printing might cheapen.

Today’s parents can see what AI might replace.

Those warnings deserve respect.

But history also asks us to develop enough imagination to see what the new tool might unlock.

The goal is not to raise children who accept every technology without question.

It is to raise young people with enough character to question wisely, enough competence to use powerful tools well, and enough vision to place those tools in the service of something good.

Parents do not need to panic.

But we do need to lead.
